Spike (Age 5)
Though I grew up in various places around the world, I was enticed to move to Vermont over thirty years ago, and, other than to travel, I have never left these green, rolling hills! I now live in the small village of Jericho in northwestern Vermont with my husband, our two dogs and two cats.
I have been painting and drawing for a long time, and animals have always been a favorite subject. A rather circuitous route led me to eventually earn a BA in Art & Psychology from Goddard College, here in Vermont.
Though my first exhibits — throughout New England and Montreal, Canada — were in the more abstract medium of collage, and the wearable medium of pieced clothing, I eventually began painting with pastels. I found that I could easily pursue my love of the play of dark against light:"chiaroscuro". The soft, yet brilliant nature of pastel painting is what enticed me into working more representationally — nature, people, and then — aha! — animals! I found pastels to be wonderful for rendering the soft textures of fur and a rich and warm means of capturing the depth of eyes.
